How to spot an Asshole.

Many people in the world toss the word asshole around carelessly.  Not everyone who does something evil, uncaring, or rude is an asshole. They may simply be psychopathic, sociopathic, or oblivious.  In order for them to be true assholes you have to understand the reasons behind their actions. Let's go through a few examples.

Lets say an old woman falls in the doorway of a store. There is a guy behind her that sees her fall, then turns and exits the store through another door. This can be kind of tricky. You really have to observe his body motions and facial reactions to gauge whether or not he is an asshole or something else. If he hesitates before turning for the other door, he may have been thinking about helping her. Assholes seldom help others unless there is a reason that is in their own interest.  It may be that it took him a second to realize there was a way to get around her, in which case he is an asshole. Another possibility is that he wanted to help her, but decided that he might find himself involved in a lawsuit, which would mean he is just a wuss, not an asshole.

For our next example lets say that you accidentally spill your drink on a guy.  He jumps up and starts calling you all sorts of names, and speculates on your mothers sexual past.  Is he an asshole?  There is no way to be sure in this situation, because this would be the normal response for most men who just had an idiot spill a drink on them.  Let's say that instead of yelling he immediately jumps up and hits you square in the mouth.  This would definitely make him an asshole, wouldn't it?  Hitting you in the mouth in and of itself would not make him an asshole, it would just make him a guy with anger management issues.  Now he may be an asshole as well, but his reaction in this situation is not a way to know whether or not he is an asshole.  Though it would be fair to say that he is a prick.

The point here is that it is important for people to understand that not every action they disagree with necessarily makes the perpetrator of that action an asshole. It is possible that he is something else like an idiot, moron, sociopath, psychopath, or any number of other classifications. So the next time you have an urge to call someone an asshole, think before you speak.
